There are many fun ways to pack a healthy meal students will enjoy

Seattle PI | September 23, 2004

Some districts (including Seattle) have banned sugary sodas and junk food, but the siren song of a lunchroom trade or a nearby fast-food restaurant is too much for some to resist. And the cost is significant, from climbing obesity rates to discipline challenges.

“Asking kids if they ever have difficulty solving problems or are not able to concentrate when they skip meals or are really hungry,” can help kids make this connection, says Heather Kissner, a registered dietitian at Children’s Hospital in Seattle.

Home Tour Aids Needy Children With $360,000

Seattle Times | September 8, 2004

The first-ever Quality Street Showcase of Exceptional Homes, sponsored by John L. Scott Real Estate and two industry partners, has raised $360,000 for Seattle’s Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center. The funds will pay for medical care for needy children throughout the Northwest.

Nonprofit Work Enriches Smart

Puget Sound Business Journal | September 2, 2004

He’s best recognized around town for the Mercedes-Benz dealership that carries his name. But anyone who is personally familiar with the man — and that number is large — realizes that he has devoted an enormous amount of his life to pursuits that are decidedly nonprofit.

Forty-three years ago, Smart walked into Children’s Hospital and agreed to serve once a week as the first male evening ward volunteer ever. There’s no money in Smart’s work at Children’s Hospital. “I get cards and letters,” he says, reflecting on the children who’ve passed through the hospital, “that I couldn’t possibly buy up at the QFC store.”

Choosing a Pediatrician: How to Pick a Doc for Baby

Seattle Times | September 2, 2004

Today’s pediatricians — and their nurses — frequently are viewed as parenting partners who can help sort out the latest theories and research on child rearing.

In addition to strictly medical concerns, it is common for parents to ask their pediatrician questions like:

  • Should we pick up a baby who cries in the middle of the night?
  • Is it OK to sleep with the baby?
  • Or should the baby always stay in his own crib?
  • What if an infant is behind schedule in trying to crawl?

“It’s not a problem finding a good doctor,” said Dr. Bruder Stapleton, pediatrician-in-chief at Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center in Seattle. “The quality and knowledge of pediatricians here is the best of anywhere I’ve been.”

Federal aid for hospitals may deter immigrants

Seattle Times | September 2, 2004

During the next four years, hospitals in the state of Washington could be reimbursed nearly $13 million for emergency care they provide to uninsured illegal immigrants. But the offer comes with a bitter pill: To tap these federal funds, health providers would have to ask pointed questions to determine whether patients are in the country illegally.

“At Children’s, we care for many immigrant children and understand the vitally important program that Congress has initiated to address this patient population,” said Dr. Richard Molteni, medical director at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.

TV's Toll on Young Minds and Bodies

New York Times | September 2, 2004

August 3, 2004: Sitting passively in front of the tube for hours is taking its toll on the minds and bodies of the nation’s children. Studies have documented unhealthy effects on weight, attention span, reading skills and socialization among children who spend hours a day watching television or playing video games.

This article covers many elements of a study led by Dimitri Christakis, MD, MPH, a pediatric researcher at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle. The study suggests that there is a significant and important association between early exposure to television and subsequent attentional problems.
