Seattle: Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center recently named Gordon Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., as chief of pediatric cardiovascular surgery and co-director of Children’s Heart Center. Dr. Cohen will also serve as associate professor of surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
“Children’s has recruited an outstanding surgeon for our heart program who will provide exceptional cardiovascular care to the children of the Pacific Northwest, and excellent leadership to our very talented Heart Center team,” said Bruder Stapleton, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief at Children’s and chair of the search committee.
Previously, Dr. Cohen was a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, one of the world’s leading cardiac surgery programs, and a senior lecturer at the Institute of Child Health at University College London. Dr. Cohen also served as a chief resident in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine from 1996-1998. Prior to that position, he was chief resident in general surgery at UCLA Medical Center.
Dr. Cohen received his M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been awarded the Francis Fontan Prize from the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, and the Golden Scalpel Award and Wilma Miley Morton Research Award from the UCLA Department of Surgery.
“Dr. Cohen’s appointment is the result of a meticulous, international search for the highest caliber physician with the unique combination of clinical expertise and commitment to bringing our Heart Center to regional and national excellence,” said Richard Molteni, M.D., vice president and medical director of Children’s. “His experience here at Children’s and the University of Washington, international reputation in pediatric cardiovascular surgery and pioneering vision for our Heart Center ensure that he will be an invaluable addition to Children’s cardiac team.”
Children’s Heart Center provides a multidisciplinary team of specialists who deal exclusively with children’s heart disease, offering non-invasive diagnosis and non-surgical treatment as well as one-stage primary surgical repair of very complex heart defects. Dr. Cohen plans to bring additional physicians and personnel to join existing Heart Center staff.
