Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center Wins Commuter Challenge Diamond Award for Second Year in a Row

Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center has once again been recognized for its outstanding efforts to ease its employees’ commute, winning its second consecutive Diamond Award from Commuter Challenge, a nonprofit committed to solving our region’s transportation issues.
Children’s is committed to continuing to be a leader in safety and mobility by reducing the number of vehicle trips to its campus. One way to do this is to provide numerous alternatives to encourage employees to commute in something other than a single occupancy vehicle.
“We are honored to have won the Diamond Award for a fourth time,” said Paulo Nunes-Ueno, transportation manager at Children’s Hospital. “Everyone at Children’s plays an important role in reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles traveling to the hospital, and we’ve achieved great success. Currently 66% of employees use some sort of alternate transportation to get to work.”
For the past 14 years, the Diamond Awards have been given to businesses and employees in King County who have shown outstanding efforts in reducing employee commute trips. The Diamond Awards publicly recognize those local organizations and individuals who are limitless in providing employees with commute trip reduction programs.
In addition to reducing employee commute trips, Children’s recently announced an aggressive new Comprehensive Safety and Mobility Plan, which puts forth new and innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint and proactively manage pedestrian and bike safety as well as improve mobility. Part of this plan includes the launch of Flexbike, a bike sharing program popular in Paris as well as shuttles that are open to the public and connect with key transportation hubs in the region.
