About Nursing at Children’s

Every day is a journey of hope and compassion at Seattle-based Children’s Hospital, voted one of the best children's hospitals in the country.

Here, you'll find your heart touched, your spirit moved and your talents challenged. This is a place where children and their families come to receive highly sophisticated, personalized care in an environment where patients and professionals alike are nurtured, encouraged and empowered. We invite you to do your best work with us...your life's work.

Behind everything we do stands our commitment to ensure our children and their families feel as safe and comfortable as possible during their stay with us.

Featuring a 250-bed hospital and more than 50 regional clinics and outreach programs, we are the only facility of our kind devoted to meeting the medical, surgical and developmental needs of children ages birth to 21 in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

If you are a RN with the spirit and commitment to care for children, we'll provide the support, whether you are a new grad, experienced adult ICU or Hem/Onc RN or highly experienced pediatric RN. Our goal is to recruit, hire and retain nurses who, like us, want to give their best to our kids and their families.

That's why we offer comprehensive, personalized training-some of the best in the industry-along with one of the most extensive ongoing education programs in the field.

You also have at your disposal the resources of the University of Washington School of Nursing, rated number one in the country, outstanding graduate programs at Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University, and a wealth of other opportunities in the Seattle area.

Our status as a premier research and teaching facility also means you have access to the field's foremost experts as well as its latest-often newly emerging-therapies, treatments and technologies.

However, it's the skilled, caring people who deliver those treatments that make us the truly exceptional hospital we are. In addition to a dedicated staff of caregivers, hallmarks of our facility include our newly renovated ICUs featuring pediatric ECMO, nitric oxide, i-stat, CVVH as well as the specialized services of Cardiology, Neurosurgery, and Solid Organ Transplant.

We also house recently remodeled inpatient units (medical, surgical, hematology-oncology, rehab and psych), which offer exceptional opportunities for career-minded RNs who want to experience the rich rewards and challenges inherent in pediatric care.

Our Services

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA)

The Northwest source for diagnosing and treating childhood cancers, this 38-bed unit is part of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), a unique partnership among three world-class organizations — Children’s Hospital, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington Medical Center.

Here, you'll care for children who have cancer, blood disorders or need bone marrow transplants. New RN staff receives extensive orientation with a preceptor. Learning opportunities are ongoing with colleagues throughout the SCCA.

Surgical Unit

This 63-bed unit cares for patients (age 0-21) from all surgical services, including Cardiovascular and Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, Urology, Nephrology, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Craniofacial, General Surgery and solid organ transplant.

The diverse patient population, variety of diagnoses and treatments, and high patient acuity make this an ideal place for nurses interested in a challenging, dynamic and medically intensive environment.

RNs, their experienced LPN partners and Nursing Technicians, are typically assigned three to six patients. Assignments include an array of complex, cutting edge surgical procedures.

Medical Unit

As part of our 77- bed Medical Unit, you will work in collaboration with our multi disciplinary team — learning EEG telemetry, asthma management skills, and management of diabetes, seizures, cystic fibrosis, chrohn's disease, newborn sepsis, and many other medical conditions that affect infants through young adult age groups.

Nurses also have the opportunity to develop expertise in airway management and respiratory assessment while caring for patients with tracheotomies and on ventilators. The Unit's family-centered environment provides you with many opportunities for teaching and primary nursing.

Our Shared Governance model provides staff a chance to participate in unit decisions as well as develop personal leadership skills. On the Medical Unit you will experience shared learning as you work with pediatricians and pediatric residents.

Complex Care / Rehab

Collaborating with a cross-disciplinary team, you'll care for children with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord trauma, burns, neurological disorders as well as physical or cognitive disabilities.

As care coordinators for patients and families Rehab RNs help to organize the family's experience and prepare them for the transition back to their community.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

This 14-bed unit receives referrals from a multi-state region and provides tertiary care to neonates up to 44 weeks gestational age. Critically ill patients may require specialized pre- and post-op care for complex congenital diagnoses, or for complex medical issues.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

This 31-bed unit is a tertiary referral center for 4 states. Specialty care includes EMCO for both cardiac and medical patients, nitric oxide, solid organ transplant including liver, kidney and heart, advanced bone marrow transplant care, congenital heart surgery, neurosurgery and every other specialty surgery. Two teams care for patients — Peds ICU and Cardiac ICU.

Inpatient Psychiatric

As a member of the IPU staff you will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team, parents and community providers to develop strategies that will facilitate the success of children and adolescents in their communities, homes and schools.

You will be caring for children ages 3 to 17 who have a variety of behavioral health disorders including ADHD, depression, eating disorders and autism.
