Biography
Dr. Malik is a pediatric endocrinologist at Seattle Children's Hospital and an investigator at Seattle Children's Research Institute (SCRI) where he leads the Improving Diabetes Outcomes Lab dedicated to improving patient health and healthcare quality for youth and young adults with diabetes.
In addition to his roles as a physician and investigator, he currently serves as:
- Interim Associate Director of the SCRI Center for Child Health, Behavior, and Development where he supports MD and PhD investigators dedicated to ensuring that every child can reach their full potential for health and wellness.
- Director of Research and Co-Medical Director of the Achieving Health in Emerging Adults with Diabetes (AHEAD) Program in which he works to develop, implement, and evaluate a novel clinical research program designed to meet the educational, behavioral health, and health care transition needs of emerging adults with diabetes.
- Co-Director of the UW & Seattle Children's Health Services and Quality of Care Research Fellowship program where he works closely with research fellows to help them acquire the necessary education and research skills to develop into future independent investigators who conduct rigorous child health research.
- Director of the UW Pediatrics Early Career Development Support (PEDS) Program in which he works to support career advancement and promotion of early career faculty in the Department of Pediatrics.

Research Description
As an investigator in the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development, Dr. Malik leads the Improving Diabetes Outcomes Lab. He is currently involved with multiple studies designed to examine and improve health outcomes in youth and young adults with diabetes:
- The development of a healthcare transition program for emerging adults with diabetes that promotes successful transition to independence with diabetes self-management and adult diabetes care [Principal Investigator]
- The use of social media to support diabetes management in adolescents with type 1 diabetes [Principal Investigator]
- The examination of the impact of food security on glucose levels and health care utilization in youth and young adults with diabetes [Site Principal Investigator]
- The use of financial incentives to improve glycemia in adolescents with type 1 diabetes [Site Principal Investigator]
- A Phase 3, open-label randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of Afrezza (inhaled insulin) versus rapid-acting insulin analogs [Site Principal Investigator]
Given his lab's mission to improve the quality of medical care delivered to youth and young adults with diabetes, he also supports Seattle Children's Hospital's involvement in national and international diabetes quality improvement collaboratives, including the T1D Exchange Quality Improvement Collaborative [Site Principal Investigator] and the SWEET Initiative [Site Principal Investigator].
