The Ethics Consultation Service and Ethics Committee help in the assessment and resolution of situations where ethical issues arise and thoughtful consideration is required. We recommend ethics consultation when conflicts between care providers and the patient or family cannot be resolved without assistance. Any patient, family member or staff person may request an ethics consultation by calling 206-987-2000 and asking that the on-call ethics consultant be paged.
If disagreement continues after conferring with a consultant, we may refer the family or provider to the full Ethics Committee for review and consultation. We review the situation and facilitate communication, mediate disagreements and, when appropriate, make recommendations. The Ethics Committee is not a decision-making body.
